  1. What is Post Consumer Recycled Plastic?

Comments Off on What is Post Consumer Recycled Plastic?

You have heard the term PCR before but what does this mean? What is Post Consumer Recycled Plastic?

Post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) refers to plastic materials that have been recovered, processed, and reused after they have been used by consumers and discarded as waste. This is in contrast to pre-consumer recycled plastic, which comes from manufacturing scrap or other industrial sources. PCR is a key component of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of plastic production and disposal.

Here’s how the process typically works:

    1. Collection: After consumers use plastic products like bottles, containers, or packaging, they dispose of them in recycling bins or through other waste collection methods.

    2. Sorting: The collected plastic waste is transported to recycling facilities where it is sorted based on its type and quality. This step helps ensure that only suitable materials are used in the recycling process.

    3. Cleaning and Shredding: The sorted plastic is cleaned to remove contaminants like labels, adhesives, or food residue. After cleaning, the plastic is shredded into small pieces to prepare it for processing.

    4. Melting and Reforming: The shredded plastic is melted down and formed into pellets or other suitable shapes. These pellets can then be used as raw materials for manufacturing new plastic products.

    5. Manufacturing: PCR pellets can be used in various industries to produce a wide range of plastic products, such as bottles, containers, bags, and more. The exact application depends on the type and quality of the recycled plastic.

The use of post-consumer recycled plastic offers several environmental benefits:

    1. Reduction of Waste: Recycling plastic reduces the amount of plastic waste sent to landfills or incineration facilities, helping to minimise environmental pollution.

    2. Energy Savings: Recycling plastic typically requires less energy than producing new plastic from raw materials like petroleum.

    3. Resource Conservation: It conserves natural resources (such as fossil fuels) that would otherwise be used to produce new plastic.

    4. Lower Carbon Footprint: Using PCR in manufacturing can result in lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to producing new plastic.

    5. Circular Economy: Incorporating PCR into the production cycle supports the concept of a circular economy, where resources are reused and waste is minimised.

Consumers can help support the use of post-consumer recycled plastic by recycling their plastic items properly, supporting products made with PCR, and advocating for recycling programs in their communities. PCR is an important component of sustainable plastic management and the broader effort to reduce plastic pollution and environmental impact.

Here at Amphorea Packaging we offer a wide range of PCR products alongside other materials such as rPET and HDPE. If you are looking to migrate your business to a more sustainable packaging model, our expert sales team will make this process easy.

  2. Product Packaging In A Circular Economy

Amphorea Packaging has a commitment to moving our customers to a circular economy to ensure that we preserve our natural resources. Product Packaging In A Circular Economy can be an easy win not only for suppliers but also customers as the world moves to a more sustainable footing.

Product packaging plays a crucial role in the transition to a circular economy, which aims to minimise waste, conserve resources, and promote sustainability. In a circular economy, the traditional linear model of “take, make, dispose” is replaced with a more sustainable approach that emphasises the following principles.

We understand this principle and this is why we place great value in providing our customers with the widest choice which is at its core sustainable.

Below are some of the key points we have developed to move us as an organisation and the industry forward.

    Reduce

The first step in sustainable packaging design is to minimise the amount of packaging used. This involves using fewer materials and designing packaging that is appropriately sized for the product. This is something we work closely with our suppliers with.

    Reuse

Reusable packaging is a key component of the circular economy. Manufacturers can design packaging that consumers can return or refill, reducing the need for single-use packaging. Most of our products can be easily reused.

    Recycle

Packaging materials should be easily recyclable. Designing packaging with materials that have established recycling infrastructure and processes helps ensure that packaging can be reused effectively. Additionally, using recycled content in packaging materials helps close the recycling loop. Almost all of our packaging can be recycled, we don’t just stop there, all of the packaging materials to protect our packaging can also be easily recycled.

    Biodegradable and Compostable Materials

In some cases, it may be appropriate to use biodegradable or compostable materials for packaging, especially for products that are meant to be consumed quickly. However, it’s important to ensure that these materials are disposed of properly to avoid contamination of recycling streams or natural environments. We offer a full consultancy service with regards to biodegradable packaging in all forms. Speak to our account managers to source yours!

    Design for Disassembly

When designing packaging, we can consider how easy it is to disassemble and separate different materials for recycling or reuse. This makes it more likely that packaging components can be incorporated into the circular economy.

    Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

EPR programs place the responsibility for managing packaging waste on the producers, encouraging them to design packaging that is easier to recycle, reuse, or dispose of responsibly. This is something we actively work towards with all of our suppliers.

    Material Selection

Choosing materials with a lower environmental impact is crucial. This includes considering the carbon footprint, water usage, and other environmental factors associated with the production and disposal of packaging materials.

    Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

We conducting LCAs for packaging with our manufacturers to identify the environmental impact of different packaging options throughout their life cycle, from production to disposal.

    Innovation and Technology

We embrace new technologies and innovations in packaging which can lead to more sustainable solutions. This includes the development of smart packaging that can provide information on freshness and reduce food waste.

    Consumer Education

We try to educate consumers on the importance of recycling and responsible disposal of packaging. Clear labelling and instructions can help consumers make sustainable choices.

    Collaboration

Collaboration among stakeholders in the packaging supply chain, including manufacturers, retailers, and waste management companies, is critical for the successful implementation of circular packaging strategies. This is something we actively work on and analyse to improve.

    Regulations and Policies

Governments can play a significant role in promoting circular packaging through regulations and incentives that encourage sustainable packaging practices.

In summary, product packaging in a circular economy focuses on reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting sustainability through thoughtful design, responsible material selection, and collaboration among stakeholders. It involves a shift away from single-use, disposable packaging toward reusable, recyclable, and sustainable alternatives.

  3. How Important Is Sustainability For Packaging

Comments Off on How Important Is Sustainability For Packaging

The globalised world has changed and consumers are becoming more eco-conscious by the day. As the world moves from a single use operation to a circular economy any high quality packaging company will guide you through the process.

Here at Amphorea, we specialise in sustainable packaging with all of our core lines carrying an option which is made from recycled material. We also have a conscious drive to ensure we are sourcing materials in rPET and PCR as a matter of course.

Sustainability is more than just a fad or a mission for the moment. This issue will have a large impact on all nations, businesses and consumers forever. When sourcing your packaging always be conscious that if an eco conscious option is available, it’s always best to consider it.

Sustainability is critically important for packaging for several reasons: Here is our practical guide to the benefits.

    Environmental Impact

Packaging materials can have a significant impact on the environment, from the production of raw materials to disposal. Unsustainable packaging can contribute to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and excessive waste in landfills and oceans. Sustainable packaging aims to minimise these negative environmental effects.

    Resource Conservation

Sustainable packaging seeks to minimise the use of finite resources like fossil fuels, water, and minerals. By using renewable or recycled materials, packaging can help conserve these valuable resources.

You can make a real impact especially in the developing world by adopting a sustainability strategy.

    Waste Reduction

Sustainable packaging is designed to reduce waste and promote recycling. It encourages consumers to dispose of packaging responsibly and promotes circular economy practices, where materials are reused or recycled rather than being discarded after a single use.

This is also becoming law in a lot of countries where it is now mandatory to recycle used packaging. Some of the world’s largest economies such as Germany already have this place and trade blocks such as the European Union are moving in this direction.

    Consumer Preferences

Many consumers are becoming more conscious of environmental issues and are actively seeking products with sustainable packaging. Brands that adopt sustainable packaging can attract environmentally conscious consumers and gain a competitive edge in the market.

    Regulatory Compliance

Governments and regulatory bodies around the world are implementing stricter regulations related to packaging and waste management. Companies that prioritise sustainability in their packaging are more likely to comply with these regulations and avoid fines or other penalties.

We work across the UK, Europe and the wider world. We understand the complexities of differing requirements for packaging across borders.

    Cost Savings

Sustainable packaging can often lead to cost savings in the long run. While initial investments in sustainable packaging solutions may be higher, they can reduce costs associated with disposal fees, raw material procurement, and transportation.

    Brand Reputation

A commitment to sustainability can enhance a brand’s reputation and demonstrate corporate responsibility. Consumers are more likely to support companies that prioritise environmental and social sustainability.

Consumers are more likely to invest in a brand if it is in line with their core values. 82% of respondents to a YouGov Poll in 2023 cited climate change as very or fairly important. By moving with these consumers it gives you a competitive advantage.

    Innovation and Creativity

The pursuit of sustainable packaging often leads to innovation in design and materials. This innovation can lead to unique packaging solutions that set a brand apart from its competitors.

    Supply Chain Resilience

Sustainability in packaging can also contribute to supply chain resilience by reducing dependency on finite resources and mitigating risks associated with supply chain disruptions. Giving you a more sustainable business over a longer period of time.

In summary, sustainability is highly important for packaging due to its positive impact on the environment, resource conservation, waste reduction, consumer preferences, regulatory compliance, cost savings, brand reputation, innovation, and supply chain resilience.

Companies that prioritise sustainability in their packaging practices can benefit both environmentally and economically in the long term.

All of the above are just some of the considerations we look into when we source our packaging for our customers. Each customer is serviced in a way that is bespoke to them and our account managers go to great lengths to understand your business needs when supplying your products.

If you have any specific questions regarding our products or or service, please contact our account managers via email on [email protected] or call or team on 0161 367 9093.

The unboxing experience can be as important as the product itself. Well-designed packaging enhances the overall customer experience and can lead to positive reviews, word-of-mouth referrals, and repeat business. 7. Omnichannel Retailing

You may or may not be aware that Amphorea LTD is not only one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of rigid packaging, but it is also the largest Omnichannel Retailers of packaging in Europe.

When we say Omnichannel, what do we actually mean? Well, Omnichannel retail is a strategy in which retailers engage customers through multiple digital and physical touch points. As customers move across these channels, applications and data move with them. This creates a consistent, on-brand experience from start to finish.

We may look like a traditional supplier of packaging but our reach is much wider than most people would expect, and some of our brand names are probably some of the most well known in the UK.

Our website is an online portal where you can view and buy our products, but just like your business, we have developed and crafted our offering to ensure that it is found by a relevant consumer at the point of need.

Not everyone needs or can use a full pallet or load of a specific packaging option. Some people like to rely on a just in time supply method when it comes to their packaging supplies. There is where other arms of our business come into play.

So, how do we do it? Quite simply through hard work and constant learning. With the Amphorea Group we have many different arms which you may or may not be aware of. Let’s start with our sister company Ampulla.

Ampulla was founded in 2006 when it became clear that packaging is required in all quantities not just in pallets and full loads. We are sure that you have heard of Ampulla, as there presence online is extensive. The products they sell are the same as ours, yet they are marketed differently due to the consumer being different. While we concentrate on traditional product placement, they adapt the offering to a range of customers who buy smaller quantities.

If we look at our glass dropper bottles which can be purchased by the pallet, they are standardised by size and cap type. However being one of the leading Omnichannel retailers of packaging our retail sites are differentiated quite a lot to ensure we capitalise on market share. For example, Ampulla has our range of Dropper Bottles, but they also have Beard Oil Bottles & Skincare bottles. But the best thing is, these products are the same. Our dropper bottles can be rebranded as any specific bottle name you like. Just like we do with our Ampulla channel.

We also have a range of other products which have been specifically researched to a specific market and placed accordingly. The range from Wide Neck Jars, Juice Bottles & much more.

    Omnichannel Retailing

There are also other aspects of our business where we continue to push the boundaries and they include other channels on a range of different platforms. You may have come across Ideon which specialises in cosmetic and beauty or Glass Bottles, which as you guessed is a targeted store specifically for Glass Products.

Amphorea also has a range of smaller online stores where we have specific products targeted to a specific market place. These include Aluminium Bottles, Jerry Cans, Juice Bottles and even a dedicated Cap website

As an organisation we understand that a market is constantly moving. Consumer tastes and demands change not only seasonally but on a daily basis and this is something we are prepared for. When you become a partner with Amphorea, you have exclusive access to our teams which gives you targeted advice not only on omnichannel retailing but marketing your business in general.

To learn more about how our products can be adapted to increase your market share and improve profitability contact our sales team now. Not only are we confident we will streamline your operation and decrease costs, our additional services can add real value to your organisation.

  8. Drinks Packaging Insight

The drinks market globally is one of the most lucrative if done correctly and your drinks packaging is essential. While there are many different areas within this market and there are regional differences based on domestic legislation and consumer tastes and demands, it is highly profitable and can provide sellers with a solid return on investment.

Drinks packaging when it comes to the drinks market can be split across 2 main areas. Those are soft drinks including juices, milkshakes and smoothies and alcoholic drinks including beer, wines and spirits.

We will start with soft drinks, and the market statistics globally. The soft drinks market is worth around £850b and is driven by some key markets. The USA, The European Union and China are markets of considerable interest. The biggest players in the field – Coca Cola and PepsiCo who are soft drink manufacturers, rather than a retailer. Business-wise, the segment is characterised by multinational brand players that mainly focus on product development, marketing and regional bottlers that licence their brands for distribution in selected areas.

    Plastic Juice Bottles

There is also considerable demand for niche products, indie brands, craft brewers & artisan producers. Especially if these products are local and have heritage behind them. The main point to highlight in the soft drinks market is that even though large organisations dominate from a brand point of view they do not operate in a retail setting. While you will find POS, in store, the business model is crafted towards licensing or wholesale production.

How does this benefit you? Retailers are always looking for new products which can drive customer acquisition. They will base the decision on the product’s quality, how it looks, retail margins etc. Your drinks packaging plays an important role in grabbing the attention of the big retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s & Asda as well as luxury locations such as Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Navigating the different options available to you can be difficult and sometimes an off the shelf solution just wont work. Our experienced team can guide you with this and craft a solution which works for you as a business, your consumer and just as importantly the retailer who will be selling your products.

Another interesting point to note on the soft drinks market is the lack of online presence from creators. Online shopping for food and drink has been dominated by the large retailers who offer products in conjunction with other items. There is massive growth potential from an omni channel strategy when it comes to marketing your drinks. Again, our team has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the omni channel marketing and are always willing to have an open and frank discussion on how to proceed.

Now, we move to the alcoholic drinks market which is slightly smaller but does have differences in how it operates mostly down to consumer tastes, trade barriers and legislation. The first glaring difference is the age barrier. In the USA the legal age to drink is 21, in the UK 18, The European Union median age is 18 as is China. While these age restrictions create a barrier to entry the price point of the product is much higher.

    Amber Beer Bottles

Another large difference in the alcoholic drinks market is where the product is consumed. By 2027, 42% of spending and 25% of volume consumption in the Alcoholic Drinks market will be attributable to out-of-home consumption (e.g., in bars and restaurants). With the trend of retail dominating how we buy our beers, wines and spirits it is imperative to ensure that your drinks packaging is attention grabbing but also reflective of your brand.

So how do you get your drinks noticed in a crowded retail space? The simple answer is partnering with a specialist who has delivered many successful products to market. Packaging may sometimes seem like an afterthought but it is the front face of your brand and the first real interaction your customers have with your products. At Amphorea we understand this and work to ensure that not only does your packaging exceed your requirement but it also holds your customer’s attention.

Regardless of your requirements, at Amphorea we have an experienced team who have worked across all of the drinks industry. We are ready to elevate your brand and products to ensure that you capitalise on market share and increase revenue. Contact our experienced sales team now to find out more.

  9. Eco Friendly Packaging Guide

The move to carbon neutral is dependent on Eco Friendly Packaging especially as the world population continues to grow. The need for sustainable options is vastly becoming one of the most important issues that a globalised world faces. According to the United Nations one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute globally, and as business and governments become more eco-conscious due to rising consumer concern the need for Eco Friendly Packaging is paramount.

If we circle back to Plastic Bottles quickly, great efforts have been made to move away from virgin PET to a more sustainable rPET (Recycled PET). You will find most of the large drinks producers, such as Coca Cola & PepsiCo moving to a more sustainable model. You will even find the caps are now attached to the bottle as both can be recycled together. We were an early adopter in rPET Juice Bottles, and provide a wide range of sizes to ensure our customers are able to service the market they operate in.

While the moves in rPET for the drinks market are a benefit to the environment in general, there are other areas where plastic packaging is being recycled en masse to service other industries. PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) plastic bottles make up a large percentage of our core range as we move away from virgin plastics. The move to PCR has not only just an environmental impact but also a financial one as well. Both the UK and the European Union have moved to adopt the Plastic Packaging Tax which applies to any plastic products with less than 30% recycled material. The European Union is yet to fully launch this across bloc like the UK has, countries like Spain & Italy have already made provisions for the tax domestically.

How does the introduction of PCR & rPEt affect you as a business and just as importantly your customers? Well, frankly quite a lot. Your demand is based on your consumers and they are demanding sustainable options. Again, we were an early adopter of PCR packaging and you will now find at least 30% recycled plastic in our ranges of coloured bottles, clear plastic bottles and much more.

Glass has often been thrown into the mix when it comes to sustainable packaging, but is it really as green as it claims to be? Some would argue yes, and some no. Glass takes a great amount of energy to create and yes, while it is made usually from recycled material, is the CO2 outlay offset properly? Not in all cases. When purchasing glass you need to be informed of the environmental impact your products have. This is something we are totally transparent about at Amphorea and our account managers are happy to have an open and frank discussion based on your needs.

Last, but by no means least, we have our new range of Aluminium Bottles. These are truly sustainable as they can be recycled time and time again without losing integrity or the quality. Additionally, as the melting point of Aluminium is one third that of glass, the environmental impact is much smaller. The costs are higher for aluminium, but so are the environmental rewards. They should always be front and centre when you are looking for Eco Friendly Packaging solutions.

If you would like to discuss moving your business to a sustainable model our dedicated sales team will work with you to drive growth while improving your eco credentials. Contact our team now to find out more

  10. Ukraine Donation – Amphorea Packaging

Amphorea Packaging in partnership with Ampulla Limited and Rapid Aid, have made a donation to the war effort in Ukraine. While the war in Ukraine has been well documented, the impact on the people and the country have been severe. The global effort to ensure that targeted support is supplied at the right times has been essential to ensure Ukraine can continue to fight for its freedom.

The conflict started on February 20th 2022 and is now over 12 months into the fighting. We think we can all agree that the Ukraine response has been nothing less than inspirational, and the global reaction firmly behind them.

We have seen many Ukraine Donations being sent and we have previously donated money and goods to different charities which were bound for the front lines. This time however, we have become more involved as the timing seemed right as war still continues, but the news outlets are less focused on the conflict itself.

So, with the Ukraine donation in mind, we initially started with the idea to donate a van which will be used on the front lines. This would allow the Ukrainians to continue the war effort to ensure the movement of goods and people. The van that has been donated is a 3.5T Luton Tail Lift Box Van. To ensure that the van was ready for departure, we put it through its MOT early to give it a clean bill of health before it starts its road journey.

When donating a van to the war effort the last thing you want to do is send it empty. We had an obligation to ensure that the van was delivered fully loaded to Ukraine with whatever supplies they requested. To start, we ensured that there was plenty of our 10L and 20L UN-Approved stackable containers which will be used to transport fuels, chemicals and water across the front lines. These are stock items that we carry and we were more than happy to ensure that they were provided.

Second on the list was a selection of food items. Our team sprung into action and ensured that the van was fully stocked with items such as pasta, sauces, tinned goods, tinned fruit and vegetables and much more.

    Company and Community Donations

Another large item on the list of requests was clothing. Our team headed off to Primark and spent £2000 to ensure that we had a range of sizes and options for different people on the front line. The clothing haul was that big, we had to get a van from our warehouse to collect the bags from The Trafford Centre.

The generous people of Tameside, Hyde & Gee Cross also flooded us with donations for which we are eternally grateful.

Not only were there donations from Amphorea and Ampulla, there was also room for valuable medical equipment. While we had limited time to pull this off, we think the result we have achieved in 2 days is remarkable and should make a massive difference to the lives of people fighting for their freedom against Russia.

This project has been spearheaded by our MD, Roy Miller. Roy has extensive connections in the local community which has driven donations of urgent items. Mix this with his networking with other organisations, he has managed to ensure that a Ukraine donation is ready in less than 3 days. Amphorea Packaging & Ampulla LTD invest heavily in the welfare of our staff & the local community. We firmly believe that an open, inclusive & generous working environment enables our staff to thrive. This is an ethos we extend outside our organisation and hope that our efforts to provide the people of Ukraine with aid goes a little way of spreading some of our core values.

The company has a long history of charitable donations across a number of good causes from food-banks to women’s sport and community events. The recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia has seen levels of destruction and death not seen since WW2. As a serving member of the reserve forces for the past 30 years I am aware of the human suffering on and near a conflict zone. By supporting the people of Ukraine we are simply displaying our natural human instinct to help others in need.
